I knew I wanted to record with Willa when I heard the power of her singing. I like working with songwriters where drums/percussion can help drive the message and feel they are going for, and this was an opportunity to do that in arrangement and producing as well. Starting with Willa’s original songs, Beet Recording Studio was a good place to develop and capture a heavier and more current groove that could hold up and balance the strength of her voice. We started by creating demos, building the sonic and stylistic ideas before tracking. This is one of my favorite ways to work, to give the artist room for the songs to grow, and to look for clues within the lyrics or raw sound to inform what we will bring in to shape the full production.
